Meet John-Anthony, our Lead Designer
John-Anthony Castelan is the Lead Designer at J&L Hardscapes, Austin’s premier provider of custom landscape design and construction.
By combining his eye for design and aesthetics in outdoor spaces, and his years of experience with the technical and executional elements of hardscaping and landscaping, John-Anthony and team provide high-quality work to Austin area homeowners.

How to get started
Over our years of providing expert landscape design and construction services, we’ve created a streamlined process that takes our valued clients all the way from consultation and planning, to construction, to the final walkthrough of your completed landscape. Keep reading to learn more about how to get started.

Initial consultation meeting
We’ll schedule a meeting with you where our expert team will consult with you about your project. This includes discussing your ultimate goals and vision, any problematic areas or particular considerations that need to be addressed, and – of course – the project budget. We offer three levels of projects with the following budgets associated:
- Entry-level projects: $15,000-$25,000
- Mid-tier projects: $25,000-$60,000
- High-end projects: $60,000 and up
The result of this meeting will be a benchmark quote based on your needs, after which our team will move into the design development phase.
During this call, we ask clients to please be prepared to provide us with photos of the space where the project will take place.

Site visit and deposit
J&L Hardscapes will come on-site to walk through your property in person, reiterating the things that were discussed over the phone and allowing time for any questions or callouts to be communicated. At this stage, we will also determine the ceiling budget for your project.
Consultation Fee
To ensure we can dedicate the necessary time and expertise to your project, J&L Hardscapes now requires a $500 consultation fee for all site visits and proposals.
This fee covers:
- A detailed, custom proposal tailored to your specific needs.
- Reserved time for serious inquiries.
If you decide to proceed with your project, the $500 consultation fee will be applied towards your total project cost.
After the site visit, J&L Hardscapes requires an up-front deposit of $5,000 to begin the process of ideating and planning the design of your custom landscape. This deposit will be applied as a discount to your total project cost after the design phase.

3D modeling and proposal
Our expert landscape designers will create an initial sketch, a 3D model with still shots, and a video walk-through of the proposed design in order to give you the full picture of the finished product. Once this design and model is presented to you, you will have the freedom to make changes and revisions until you are completely satisfied with the final designs.
- 04.
Cost of installation and project start
Once the design is fully approved, J&L Hardscapes will be able to provide you with an accurate cost of installation. We will send you a full proposal via email breaking down the scope of work and project cost, with the $5,000 deposit applied as a discount.
